About this project

Protect scholars. Strengthen academic freedom

The Scholars at Risk (SAR) uOttawa Program is part of a global movement dedicated to protecting threatened academics, preventing attacks on higher education and defending academic freedom and university autonomy — essential foundations of democratic societies. Your generosity ensures that scholars whose lives and careers are at risk can continue their research and practice through one- to two-year appointments across the University of Ottawa.

These fellowships provide more than refuge — they offer a secure environment where scholars can pursue their vital work, contribute to campus life and uphold the values of science and higher education. Recognized in the UNESCO Guidelines for Universities Hosting Human Rights Defenders (2025), the SAR uOttawa Program is a university-wide initiative supported by the Office of the Vice-President, Research and Innovation; APUO; Official Languages and Bilingualism Institute (OLBI); Collège des chaires de recherche sur le monde francophone; and University of Ottawa Library.

By supporting the SAR uOttawa Program, you stand in solidarity with scholars at risk and help ensure that knowledge, academic freedom and human rights continue to thrive.
