Supporting students through life’s emergencies
An Indigenous-led, donor-powered initiative that supports Indigenous students at the University of Ottawa through life’s unexpected challenges. Unforeseen emergencies can derail students, particularly those who are far from home and away from their cultural and community ties. Students who can’t make it back for a loved one’s funeral because they could only afford a one-way ticket home may struggle to return and continue their studies. Others may suddenly find themselves without stable housing and need short-term support while they secure a safe place to stay. These moments can seem like small obstacles, but timely support can make all the difference. When students receive help in difficult moments, they can stay focused on their studies, go on to finish their program and become important contributors to the health and future of their communities.
Your contribution to the Bamenimàwàn Fund means more Indigenous students at uOttawa will experience their community’s care directly and immediately. Established in 2023 as an endowment, the fund serves as a safety net for Indigenous students facing unexpected expenses that traditional funding supports may not cover. Adding to the endowment would allow the Office of Indigenous Affairs to assist more Indigenous students when urgent needs arise and to help ensure that temporary financial challenges do not become permanent barriers to education. Moreover, beyond helping individuals, the Bamenimàwàn Fund creates a ripple effect in delivering on the promise of reconciliation.
